Tips to Benefit Optimally from Ramadan
Ramadan is the most blessed month in the Islamic calendar.
It is primarily a spiritual training course intended to help us
Cultivate essential virtues and skills in order to lead a meaningful
life.
Most often we live at a very superficial level of our existence,
Forgetting our true essence and Identity as human beings.
In other words, we become totally preoccupied with the physical
and material dimensions, forgetting the spiritual core of our
personalities.
Ramadan, therefore, comes to remind us of who we
truly are and how we can discipline ourselves in such a way that
we are fully awake to our full spiritual potential.
In order to benefit from the blessed month of Ramadan and its
Spiritual regimen, I suggest that we focus on the following:
1. Welcome Ramadan with great fervor and spirit and expect to
come out of it fully transformed in body, mind, and soul.
2. Perform all of the acts of worship while being fully awake to
their inner dimensions and meanings. Most often we allow ourselves to go
through these rituals as mere mechanical chores with the result that we gain
virtually no benefit from them either spiritually or morally
.
3. Let your fasting be a fasting of body, mind, and soul. As Imam Ghazali said,
the vast majority of people fast only for namesake. For while staying away from
food, drink, and sexual gratifications, their minds, eyes, ears, tongue, and other
faculties feast on haram (unlawful matters). Therefore, in order to gain any true
benefit from our fasts, we need to impose a total self-restraint upon all our
faculties and stay away from all sinful and idle thoughts, words, and actions, and
nurture the thought and remembrance of Allah.
4. Ramadan is not merely a month of fasting. It is rather a season to cultivate all
sorts of virtues and good habits. It is the perfect opportunity to break free of all
negative habits that have been holding us back from achieving the true
happiness and perfection that is ours as a birthright. So seize the opportunity
and focus on achieving real goals to make it a true life-changing and life-
enhancing experience.
5. Ramadan is the month of empathy and generosity. In fact, one of the main
purposes of fasting is to instill in us empathy for the poor and the less deprived.
By exposing us to compulsory hunger, we are given a practical lesson in hunger
and thirst and thus we become better motivated to empathize with the poor.
Hence we are ordered to practice the optimum level of charity in the month of
Ramadan.
6. Ramadan is the time to familiarize ourselves with the Qur’an, the true source
of guidance, illumination, healing, and mercy—Allah’s perfect gift to humanity.
We can only do justice to the Book when we go beyond merely chanting and
memorizing it to reflecting and meditating upon the Revealed Word and respond
to it in true spirit by acting upon its teachings.
7. One of the main purposes of all of the acts of worship in Islam is to cultivate
in us a true sense of community and spirit of fellow humanity. Therefore, it is
imperative that our compassionate words and acts be extended not only towards
ourselves but also towards all of Allah’s creation.
؟When we should Fast
Every year, for one complete lunar month-the ninth month in the Islamic calendar
, you as an adult Muslim are required to fast. From dawn to sunset in the month of
Ramadan, you are required to refrain from all food and drink and sexual relations
with your spouse.
If you are sick or on a journey you are allowed not to fast but you must make up for
it by fasting the same number of days missed during Ramadan.
Why should you fast?
The main purpose of fasting is described in the Quran as "so that you may attain
Taqwa or God-consciousness." Fasting is thus yet another instrument for bringing us
closer to our natural state, our state of Fitrah and for cleansing this state from the
dross of any disobedience and corruption.
"Fasting is a shield," said the noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so
simply and eloquently. And he also said: "Whoever spends the month of Ramadan in
complete faith and self-rectification, his previous sins will be forgiven."
More devotion, closer to the Quran in Ramadan
Ramadan is a month of heightened devotion. In it, Salat is performed with greater
intensity. There are extra Sunnah Salat on Ramadan nights called Salat at-Tarawih.
In the last ten days of Ramadan, some retreat to the mosque to perform Itikaf, a
period of intense reflection and devotion, seeking guidance and forgiveness, and
reading the Quran.
Ramadan is a great opportunity to get closer to the blessed guidance of the Quran
which was revealed in this month. Ramadan is also called the month of the Quran.
Ramadan's effect on our body and behavior
The month of Ramadan is an opportunity to develop qualities of endurance and self-
restraint, to control anger and a fiery or malicious tongue.
It is an opportunity to fine tune the body and shed it of obesity and sloth, and to
benefit from any therapeutic effects fasting may have.
Generosity in Ramadan
Ramadan is a time to awaken compassion and solidarity with others and in particular
with the poor. We are urged to be more liberal in giving during Ramadan and are
required at the end of fasting to give Sadaqatul-Fitr, an amount to enable all to share
in the spirit of warmth, affection and brotherhood.
Ramadan is above all an opportunity to reorient oneself to the Creator and the
natural path of goodness and God-consciousness.
Ramadan is not related to God's wrath
Fasting in Islam is in no way related to penance for sins nor is it regarded as a
means of appeasing God's wrath as in some religions.
The Ramadan spirit
Although Ramadan may appear to be a hard and difficult month, it is in fact an
enjoyable time.
A special atmosphere prevails in homes, in mosques and in Muslim communities as a
whole. Muslims look forward to the coming of Ramadan with great longing and
expectation and feel a certain sadness when the month is at an end.
Ramadan is not about overeating and laziness
It is possible that too much emphasis is sometimes placed on the preparation of food
during Ramadan.
In fact a greater variety and quantity of food may be consumed during the month of
Ramadan at nights than in other periods.
And some of us may end up weighing more at the end of the month than at the
beginning.
It may also be possible that Ramadan be taken as a time when normal work during
the daytime is reduced or suspended.
It should be borne in mind that normal work activities should continue during
Ramadan and it should not be taken as an excuse for sluggishness and idleness.
You need to be careful that the true benefits of fasting, of self-restraint and control,
are not lost through gluttony on the one hand or idleness on the other.
The night of qadr
The night of qadr is the most virtuous night of the year. Allah
says in the Qur'an: 'We revealed it on the night of power [that is, qadr].
What will tell you what the night of power is? It is better than a
thousand months' (97:1-3). Any action, for example, reciting
the Qur'an, making remembrance of Allah, and so on, on the
night of qadr is better than the same act performed for one
thousand months.
Which night is it?
Scholars hold different opinions as to the exact
night that is the night of qadr. Some hold the
opinion that it is the 21st, some say the 23rd,
others say the 25th and still others say it is the
29th. Some say that it varies from year to year
but it is always among the last ten nights of
Ramadan. Most scholars, though, vouch for the
27th.
Ahmad recorded, with a sahih chain, from Ibn
'Umar that the Prophet said: 'He who likes to
seek that night should do so on the 27th.' Ubayy
ibn K'ab said: 'By Allah, and there is no God but
Him, it is during Ramadan – and He swore to that
– and by Allah, I know what night it is. It is the
–
– night of the 27th. Its sign is that the sun rises
–
– in the morning white and without any rays'.
–
– This is related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ahmad,
–
– and by at-Tirmidhi who called it sahih.
Praying and making supplications during the
–
– night of qadr: Al-Bukhari and Muslim record
–
– from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, upon
–
– whom be peace, said: 'Whoever prays during
–
– the night of qadr with faith and hoping for its
–
– reward will have all of his previous sins
–
– forgiven'.
As to the supplication during the night of qadr, 'Aisha said: ' I
–
– asked the Messenger of Allah: ' O Messenger of Allah, if I
–
– know what night is the night of qadr, what should I say
–
– during it’? He said: 'Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You
–
– love to pardon, so pardon me.' This is related by Ahmed,Ibn
–
– Majah, and by at-Tirmidhi, who called it sahih.
–
When is it preferred to seek this night?
It is preferred to seek this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, as the
Prophet, upon whom be peace, strove his best in seeking it during that time.
We have already mentioned that the Prophet would stay up during the last ten
nights, would wake his wives, and then would remain apart from them to
worship.
