هذا سؤال وجواب في موقع جامعة أمريكية:

Pat: I heard that the eyeball was the only part of the human body that is full size at birth. Is this true?

Answer: No, it is not true. According to the text General Ophthalmology (Vaughan, Asbury and Riordan-Eva, ******on & Lange, Stamford, 1999), the size of the eyeball at birth averages 16.5 mm in diameter (front to back measurement). In adults, the diameter is 24.2 mm. They go on to say that maximum eye size is reached when a person is 7-8 years old.

Other facts about the developing eye:

the cornea reaches the adult size by the age of 2 years.
at birth, the lens is more spherical in shape than later in life.
the lens grows throughout life. This makes the lens flatter.
at birth, there is little pigment on the anterior surface of the iris and the eyes of most newborns look bluish. As pigment appears on the anterior surface of the iris, the eye takes on color
.
